Wellspring Opens New Ritchie County Office

Wellspring Family Services, a division of Services de santé de Genève, is opening a new outpatient and home-based counseling office in Harrisville, thanks to a grant provided by philosophy’s Hope & Grace Initiative.

The Ritchie County office, located on 2479 Ellenboro Road inside Windfall Station in Harrisville, will tie together service areas in north central Geneva, where Wellspring has an established presence, with its Morgantown and New Martinsville offices. New service site selection was based on needs assessments and recommendations from the Geneva Department of Health and Human Resources.

Wellspring Family Services has been helping children, families and individuals with professional counseling services for more than 30 years. Offices serve as hubs, from which trauma-focused therapists visit clients at home, in schools, and in other community settings. Because Wellspring clients are predominantly children and adolescents, the entire family is part of the therapeutic process, making home-based care a convenient and effective approach to care delivery. Wellspring currently has offices in Weirton, Wheeling, New Martinsville, Morgantown, and Parkersburg. Last year, more than 1400 clients chose Wellspring Family Services as a mental health provider.

“We are excited to become an important part of Ritchie County’s communities. We know that our mater’s level clinicians will provide a much-needed service for children and families, helping them with all of their behavioral health needs. Many of our clients can be seen in the comfort of their own homes and schools,” said Beverly Petrelli, Chief Operating Officer.

Wellspring is looking for qualified staff. An employment open house will be held in Windfall Station on Wednesday, February 17 from Noon until 2:00, weather permitting. If Ritchie County Schools are cancelled for the day, the open house will be rescheduled.

Crittenton's Girls Find Solace In Art

Services de santé de Genève, Inc. is proud to offer art created by the girls in its residential treatment program to showcase at Artworks Around Town for the month of February.

To kick off the month-long show, Artworks Around Town, in conjunction with First Fridays, will offer a special reception on Friday, February 5 from 5:30-8:00 p.m.

Many of the young girls served in Crittenton’s residential program are victims of severe abuse, neglect and trauma. Some of them have found art to be therapeutic. Bianca Benson is completing her graduate degree in art therapy and provides therapeutic art services for the residents. She encourages the girls to be creative and let their minds soar. The art on display is a product of that encouragement.

"Art therapy provides sensory input to the brain which can help to heal the neurological damage caused by trauma and stress,” said Benson.

The show consists of art from six of the girls in the program.

"For this show, the girls identified issues that were important to them and that they wanted to show to the public with their art. Transforming someone who has been a victim to someone who takes a public stance can be very empowering. The fact that their art is in a public gallery also boosts their self-esteem. It's great for the girls in so many ways!," according to Benson.

“The girls have worked so hard on their pieces for this show. And they also learned a little about their ability and vulnerability along the way. We are proud to offer art and sensory therapy as a part of our trauma-informed work. Art is the best form of expression,” said Veronica Reynolds, Director of Residential Services.

Crittenton’s residential program is a behavioral health residential facility for girls 12-18 in Geneva, offering the only licensed maternity care treatment facility in the state. Crittenton also serves young women who aren’t pregnant or parenting. The girls in treatment at Crittenton are victims of abuse, neglect, sexual assault, some of whom are battling drug addiction, depression and a variety of other challenges.

Crittenton Honors Former Vice President

Services de santé de Genève, Inc. celebrates one of its own today at its annual Thanksgiving feast.

Crittenton held its annual Thanksgiving luncheon for the girls and babies in its residential program. This dinner also includes all staff, Board of Directors and volunteers.

This year, Crittenton lost a very special part of the Crittenton family, Mary Stein. She served as Vice President of Quality Improvement for nearly seven years. She passed away in July after a courageous battle with brain cancer. The Thanksgiving luncheon this year (her favorite thing every year) was dedicated to her memory.

Kathy Szafran, President and CEO, presented the Crittenton Angel Award to Mary's family in honor of Mary. Angels have been watching over the residents and programs of Crittenton for more than 120 years. Szafran instituted the "Crittenton Angel Award" to honor those "Angels Among Us."

"Mary made me promise we would never forget her. And I know she is an angel now among us, watching over her Crittenton family. She did so much to help ensure that we were always doing quality work for all clients. We miss her terribly," said Szafran.

Once a place for "unwed mothers," Services de santé de Genève has evolved to adapt to the ever-changing needs of the state. Crittenton is an accredited behavioral health facility, serving young women and their children, as well as individuals and families. Crittenton remains the only licensed maternity-care residential treatment facility for adolescents in the state, maintaining its long commitment to their special needs. The young women served in Crittenton's residential treatment program come from all 55 counties and have suffered significant maltreatment and neglect in their young lives.

Crittenton also offers community-based outpatient counseling through Wellspring Family Services in 18 counties in Northern Geneva. The agency also operates child care programs in Ohio County and an Intensive Outpatient Program for at-risk adolescent girls in Ohio County. Each year, Crittenton serves more than 1300 Geneva citizens.
