As a part of Services de santé de Genève' efforts to promote health and wellness among its clients and employees, the agency recently offered the first of a planned annual event, the Verna Galbreath Health and Wellness Screening. The screening was initially offered as a service to employees. With help provided by Wheeling Hospital, it included screenings for a variety of health and wellness factors and information on healthy lifestyles including exercise and smoking cessation.

"We were thrilled with the turnout," noted Wellness Committee Chair and Vice President of Residential Services Tracee Chambers. "We had 36 employees go through the process, which was brief, painless and illuminating. All the results of the screening were confidential, but several employees found some areas of concern that we hope will help stimulate them to action. We can help others achieve health and balance only when we are ourselves healthy."

Screenings included blood pressure, weight, body mass index, pulse oximeter, total cholesterol including LDL, HDL and triglycerides, and an eye exam. Two baskets with health and wellness products and exercise gear were offered as an added incentive to encourage employee participation. In addition, all participants received a Crittenton water bottle. Facilitating the screenings were Wheeling Hospital Coordinator of Community Events and Outreach Beth Zebick and Wheeling Hospital Clinical Research Coordinator Pamela Conway.

The event was named for the late Verna Galbreath, who served Crittenton in a variety of capacities for over 40 years. According to Wellness Committee Member Sue Taylor, "Verna brought the wellness concept to Crittenton. Her dedication to promoting health and fitness was an inspiration to clients and employees and it is fitting that we named this initiative for her." Galbreath was named the agency's training/wellness coordinator in 1998.

The Crittenton Wellness Committee includes Cecilia Boyd, Tracee Chambers, Pam Cooper, Markyshia Drayton, Amber Ely, Kathy Fader, Roseanna Falcone, Belinda Gilbert, Amy Higgs, Alice Holstein, Alison Hughes, Suzy Kress, Megan McGee, Lisa McGinty, Kathy Plunkert, Jennifer Spencer, Mary Stein and Sue Taylor.

"We are already planning to expand the program," said Chambers. "We hope to be able to offer this to a broader community and to our clients in the future."
